The Institute for Research on Higher Education disposes of a noteworthy stock of recent and historical literature and information. It is administered within the framework of a specialist library and can be accessed for differentiated research purposes via an extensive library and literature data base.

The library of the Institute currently comprises 55,000 volumes and about 146 journals. Among these there are important stocks about the systems of education and higher education in the GDR and Eastern European countries. All titles of this specialist library are accessible through a literature data base. Both library and literature data base were established during the 1960s in the Information Centre of the former State Institute for Research on Higher Education in East Berlin (Zentralinstitut für Hochschulbildung). In 1990, after this Institution was dissolved the existing stock could be secured and continuously updated and extended by the Project Group for Higher Education Research Berlin-Karlshorst with the financial support of the Federal Ministry for Education and Science and the German Research Council. The extensive stock was handed over to the Institute for Research on Higher Education (HoF) Halle-Wittenberg when it was founded in 1996. The work of the library as well as documentation and information services are now continued within the framework of the institute.

The services are not only available to the researchers of the Institute itself but also to external experts.
